There is a committee. The Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying AMAD. Reconvened for 2026. Its job, on paper, is to review whether Canada is ready to expand MAID to people whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental illness. March 17, 2027 is the deadline. Ten months away. The committee hears from experts. Reports to Parliament, assesses readiness.That’s the story they’re telling you and here’s what they’re not.

This week, an expert in Canada’s assisted dying laws warned that the committee has “gone off the rails.” Jocelyn Downie professor at Dalhousie, one of the most prominent legal advocates for MAID expansion, loves promoting death said the hearings are weighted toward opponents, are hearing testimony unrelated to the committee’s mandate, and risk making decisions “based on an incomplete set of evidence.”
